Participation in the Dumbrava Vlăsiei Architecture Competition – House Form/A
Situated in the exceptional natural setting of Dumbrava Vlăsiei, surrounded by forest and distanced from the intensity of the urban environment, House Form/A was conceived as an architectural response that seeks harmony with its landscape while offering adaptability to the changing needs of its inhabitants. The project reflects a dual ambition: to respect and engage with the natural context, and to articulate a flexible domestic environment capable of transformation over time.
Organized on two levels, the residence establishes a clear spatial hierarchy. The ground floor is dedicated to collective daily life, where kitchen, dining, and living areas merge into a unified open plan, anchored by a central fireplace that acts as both a functional and symbolic focal point. The upper floor accommodates the private domain, with bedrooms and auxiliary functions, culminating in a master suite with privileged views toward both the forest and the future park. A continuous terrace connects the entire upper level, offering the family an elevated vantage point for relaxation and community engagement, while reinforcing the spatial dialogue between interior and exterior.
The architectural language of the house is defined by the expressive use of wood, employed in façade cladding, ceilings, and custom furniture. The exterior is enveloped by a system of vertical timber slats mounted on sliding panels, which operate as dynamic filters—acting alternately as solar protection, light modulators, or transparent openings that frame views of the garden. Large glazed surfaces articulate the day zone, further strengthening the bond between the domestic interior and the surrounding natural environment.
Music served as an underlying conceptual inspiration for the design, premised on the belief that a house that sings is a house that brings joy. This idea materialized in a poetic gesture: the engraving of a chosen musical score onto a concrete surface in the dining area, the heart of daily family life. Through this subtle yet profound insertion, the project celebrates memory, rhythm, and emotional resonance within the architectural experience.
In its entirety, House Form/A aspires to be more than a dwelling: it is conceived as an evolving framework for life, shaped by its inhabitants and attuned to the passage of time, while remaining deeply rooted in the natural beauty of Dumbrava Vlăsiei.
